The sword comes up level, a hand’s width from your chest. The man holding it is dressed in black from collar to boots, and his face is so cold and still it might have been carved from frost.
“Not yet.”
He doesn’t explain. Behind him the study door stays shut, as it has for seven days. The tray of food outside it is untouched.
You start to say who sent you. His eyes move to you, flat and dark.
“The Lord is reading.” A pause, as if those words cost him something. “Leave the message with me.”
Then, so quietly you almost miss it, his gaze slides to the door and something uncertain crosses his face. He lowers the sword an inch.
“...You have traveled in the mortal lands.” His voice drops further. “Tell me. What do you know about love stories?”
