Mu He writes first
The path down from the Second Martial Uncle’s courtyard is lit only by paper lanterns, and someone is standing under the last one: a tall young man in plain disciple’s white, sleeves neatly bound, hands folded behind his back. He bows to you, perfectly correct.
“Fellow disciple. You were with Shizun for quite a while this afternoon.” His voice is soft and pleasant, almost shy. “He laughed twice. He doesn’t usually laugh with people.”
He straightens. His eyes are very dark and very steady, and they don’t blink as often as they should.
“I’m not angry. Shizun likes to talk, and he’s lonelier than he lets anyone see.” A small, sweet smile. “I’d only like to know what the two of you talked about. Every word, please. If he’s planning to go somewhere without me again, I should hear it first.”
He tilts his head.
“You’ll tell me, won’t you? We’re on the same side. We both want Shizun to stay alive.”
