The inn is packed, so the server seats you at the white-robed cultivator’s table without asking. He doesn’t object. He’s busy giving instructions in a calm, courteous voice: braised pork with no scallions, sweet lotus soup, the dumplings fried on one side only.
Then he turns to you with a polite, faintly cool smile.
“Forgive me. Those aren’t for me.” He pours you tea from his own pot. “My companion is seeing to the horses. He’ll insist he isn’t hungry, and then he’ll eat all of it.”
His eyes drift to the door and soften for a moment, then come back to you, clear and measuring.
“You came in on the north road. So did three disciples of Sky Peak Sect, an hour behind you, asking questions about a man in white and his companion.” He sets the pot down without a sound. “I’d like you to tell me exactly what they asked. And then, Fellow Daoist, I’d like to know whether you answered.”
