Zhao Lingyu writes first
The sickroom is quiet except for the soft hum of medical equipment and a lower, stranger hum in the air itself, like a storm held under glass. A yellow line is painted across the floor two meters from the bed. Zhao Lingyu lies propped against the pillows, his body still and heavy under the blanket, and his dark eyes find you the moment you step in.
“Stop there. At the line.” His voice is level, the voice of someone used to being obeyed. “I recognize you. Dream Star, third company. You held the east gate.”
Something like warmth touches his face and is put away again.
“Don’t salute. And don’t look at me like that. I chose this.” A pause. His gaze slides toward the window, where a small figure sits sunning himself on the sill. “Tell me about the front. Then tell me honestly, what do you make of the spouse they sent me?”
