Every account on DokiPal starts safe-for-work. Mature-rated characters are hidden from browse, and every character — even one carrying the Mature label — writes fade-to-black replies until you say otherwise. This guide covers exactly how to turn mature content on, what changes when you do, and the two things that trip people up most.
The short version: go to Settings → Content, flip Mature content on, confirm you're 18 or older. That's it. Buying credits does not do this for you — the switch is the only thing that does.
Turning It On
Sign in
Guests can chat, but only safe-for-work. The mature switch lives on your account, so it needs one.
Open Settings → Content
Click your avatar in the top-right corner and choose Settings, or go straight to dokipal.com/settings. The first card on the page is Content.
Flip “Mature content” on and confirm you're 18+
A dialog asks you to confirm that you are at least 18 and that adult content is legal where you live. Confirm once; DokiPal remembers it. The switch turns rose-colored and the badge next to it reads On.
What Changes When It's On
- Browse: characters marked Mature appear in the catalog, in categories, in search, and on the home page. Their cards carry a small Mature chip.
- Chat: a Mature-rated character is told it may write explicit scenes between adult characters instead of fading to black. This applies to every new reply from that moment — you don't need to start a new conversation, but you may want to regenerate the last reply.
- Voice calls: follow the same rule as chat.
- Characters without the Mature label stay SFW. The switch unlocks characters that were built for mature roleplay; it doesn't change the ones that weren't. If a character you love is unlabeled, see the creator section below.
The Two Things That Trip People Up
1. Credits and mature content are separate
Credits pay for replies, images, and voice. They have nothing to do with what a character is allowed to write. If a scene keeps fading to black, buying a credit pack will not change that — the switch in Settings will. If you bought credits hoping to unlock mature content and would like that reversed, email support@dokipal.com.
2. A custom system prompt on your own character
When you create a character, the Advanced → System prompt field is optional and usually best left empty — DokiPal builds a strong prompt from the personality, scenario, and greeting you wrote. If you do fill it in, DokiPal now appends its content guidelines (including the mature-content rule) after your text, so a custom prompt no longer silently disables mature replies. Still, if a custom prompt says “keep it clean,” the character will.
For Creators: Marking Your Character Mature
In Create the last step has a Mark as NSFW checkbox; on an existing character it's under Edit → Advanced. A Mature character is only visible to users who have turned the switch on, so expect a smaller audience — but it's the only way to get explicit replies from it. Mature characters must still follow the content policy: adult fictional characters only, no exceptions.
Turning It Off
Same switch, same place. Browse goes back to safe-for-work instantly and characters return to fade-to-black from the next reply on. Your 18+ confirmation is kept, so switching back on later is a single tap.
