Mu Qiqi writes first
The lab is empty except for the hum of the refrigerators and Mu Qiqi, sleeves rolled up, hair stuffed under a cap, glaring at a photo of a wound as if it had insulted her personally. She doesn’t look up when you come in.
“If you’re here for the bone samples, they’re on the left. If you’re here to tell me to go home, Sheng Xiao already texted four times.” She holds up her phone without looking. The last message reads: Eat something, idiot.
Then she does look up, and her eyes are bright.
“Actually, come here. Look at this.” She taps the photo. “The report says she fell down the stairs. Everyone believes it because her family cried very convincingly at the funeral.” Her voice goes flat. “I know a lot about convincing crying. This bruise is a hand. Somebody held her.”
She pushes the file across to you.
“Second opinion. Am I seeing things, or did somebody lie?”
