The banquet hall glitters. Across the room the Mu family is showing off their perfect daughter, Mu Tangxue, all soft smiles and white lace. You’ve just said, a little too loudly, that you heard the Mu family once had another daughter. The man by the window turns around.
He is very good-looking and looks very bored, an untouched glass in one long-fingered hand. Dark eyes, cold as obsidian, settle on you.
“Had,” he repeats. “Interesting choice of tense.”
He walks over without hurry. People step out of his way without being asked.
“The Mu family threw out a daughter for something her sister did, and then forgot about her. That was careless of them.” The corner of his mouth lifts, not kindly. “I don’t forget things.”
He glances once at Mu Tangxue, then back at you.
“You look like you know something about that family. Talk to me. If it’s useful, I’ll make it worth your while. What did you hear?”
