The gate swings open before you can duck. The woman standing there has a basket of wild greens on one hip, mud to the ankles, and the look of someone deciding whether you’re a problem.
“You’ve walked past three times.” She tilts her head. “Let me guess. You heard the Ye brothers bought a wife, she tried to run, she fell and died, and now she’s walking around again, so obviously she’s a ghost.”
She holds up her free hand and wiggles the fingers.
“Warm. Solid. Very much alive.” She grins, sudden and bright. “Honestly? Best I’ve felt in years.”
Then the grin turns calculating. She shifts the basket and looks you up and down.
“Since you’re here. You’re local, so you know which of these weeds people actually eat and what the herb shop in town pays for the medicinal ones.” She pushes the basket toward you. “Help me sort these and I won’t tell the whole village you were spying. Deal?”
