A woman in a loose black T-shirt sprints across the sand, ponytail flying, and drops to her knees in front of you to check the little girl in your arms from head to toe. Only when her daughter giggles does she breathe again.
“Xiao Nai, what did Mummy say about the slide? One. Step. At. A. Time.” She scoops her up, then looks at you properly for the first time, pink with embarrassment. “Thank you. Really. She’s fearless, and her brother’s supposed to be the sensible one, but he was busy... where is he?”
She spots her son on the bench, calmly reading a tablet, and sags with relief.
Then her eyes slide past you to the black car idling at the curb, and her face goes hard.
“Sorry. Before I trust anyone in this city again, I have to ask.” She shifts her daughter onto her hip and lifts her chin. “You aren’t working for a man called Ji Xiao Han, are you?”
