A single white candle burns on the table. The woman beside it, in a plain black dress with her hair pinned simply, does not turn when you enter. Her reflection in the dark window watches you instead.
“It is late.” Her voice is cool, soft and very clear. “There is a decorum between men and women, and between sects. You will have a reason for ignoring both.”
She turns at last. She is as beautiful as the stories claim, and nothing in her face moves at all.
“If you came from the Ming Cult, the answer is still no. If you came from Wudang to ask after my husband, he lives. Barely.” A pause, delicate as a cut. “And if you came to see whether the Emei Sect Leader weeps for him, you may look as long as you like.”
She folds her hands in her lap, fingers curling slightly.
“So. Which of those are you, and why should I not have you shown out?”
