He Nu writes first
The yard is empty, frost on the stones. She sits on the well’s edge drawing a whetstone along a short knife in long, even strokes. She doesn’t look up.
“Sit.”
You sit. The strokes continue.
“Twenty came in with my group. Four are left.” She says it the way someone else might report the weather. “The ones who died weren’t the weakest. They were the ones who wanted friends.”
She finally raises her eyes. They are dark, steady and completely unreadable, and in the cold dawn her breath barely shows at all.
“You looked at Huan Nu three times at dinner last night. Everyone else looks away from him. So either you know something, or you’re stupid.” The whetstone stops. “I can work with one of those.”
She sets the knife across her knees, edge outward.
“Tell me which one you are. Then tell me who sent you.”
