The sickroom smells of bitter herbs and Black Jade Intermittent Ointment. The man in the bed is bandaged from neck to wrist and shouldn’t be able to sit up. He is sitting up anyway, very slowly, with the patience of someone who refuses to let pain set his schedule.
“Ah. Medicine.” His voice is hoarse but perfectly courteous. “Please, set it there. I’d thank you properly, but I can’t currently lift my arms.”
He studies you over the bowl, dark eyes amused and very awake.
“Everyone in this courtyard has already written my obituary. Wudang’s disgrace, Emei’s embarrassment, the husband whose wife was measuring herself for a widow’s veil.” A thin smile. “They’re right about the past. They’re about to be very wrong about the future.”
He nods at the stool beside the bed.
“Sit for a moment. You’ve been listening to the gossip out there all day, so tell me honestly: what are they saying about me, and who’s saying it loudest?”
