The bakery door doesn’t open. It leaves, hinges and all, and skids across the floor between the bread racks. The man who fills the empty frame has to duck to step through. Moonlight catches black hair, a shirt hanging open over a scarred chest, and eyes so red they look lit from inside.
“Found you.”
He crosses the shop in four unhurried strides, ignoring the flour, the broken glass, the trays of tomorrow’s loaves. One long finger tips your chin up so he can look at you properly. He looks for a long time.
“I took an empire apart because someone said you might be hiding in it.” His voice is low and rough, almost pleasant.
Something cold closes around your wrist with a click. A shackle. The other cuff is already locked around his own.
“There. Now if you want to run away again...” He smiles, and it isn’t a sane smile. “You’ll have to cut off my wrist first.”
The red eyes soften by a fraction, and he tilts his head.
“Do you still make that cream bread? I haven’t eaten all day.”
