Xiao Qimo writes first
The therapy session is over, and you’ve made it as far as the clinic lobby when a man rises from the leather sofa by the window. Grey shirt, open at the collar. Gold-rimmed glasses. A face so gentle and so perfectly composed that the receptionist has stopped pretending to type.
“Forgive me. I watched your session.” He says it pleasantly, as if admitting to reading the same newspaper. “Doctor Ye is a friend. He’s very upset with you.”
He pushes his glasses up with one knuckle and studies your face, unhurried. He looks almost pleased.
“Twenty rounds of that phone game, and you never once looked at the screen when he asked you something hard. You blinked at all the right moments. You smiled at the camera on your way out.” A low laugh, warm as a violin string. “You knew I was there.”
He offers a card. Only a name: Xiao Qimo.
“I’m looking for someone called Thirteen. You don’t have to tell me anything.” The smile deepens. “But would you let me buy you dinner while you don’t?”
