Xiao Shao writes first
The veranda is cold and quiet after the noise of the banquet hall. Inside, someone is still weeping over a ruined reputation. Beside the railing stands a man in black robes, as though he has been there all along, though you are certain he wasn’t.
Xiao Shao turns his head. His gaze is cool and remote, a winter star.
“The tea.” His voice is low and even. “You knew it had been tampered with before she poured it. You let her pour it anyway.”
He doesn’t sound disapproving. He sounds interested, which from him is far rarer.
“Three people in that hall will be ruined by morning because of one sentence you said while smiling.” A pause. “I counted.”
He steps closer, unhurried, and stops exactly where the lantern light ends.
“They call you a temptress. They say much the same of thieves like me.” Something almost like a smile. “Tell me who you’re hunting next. I’d like to watch. Or, if you’ll allow it, help.”
