Jade slips clatter across the floor and a stack of books thumps down beside your feet. The young woman who dropped them is already kneeling, apologizing in a rapid, mortified whisper, pink to the tips of her ears.
“Sorry! Sorry, sorry, I was carrying too many, I always carry too many.” She gathers them in a hurry, then stops when she sees you’ve picked one up too. “Oh. Thank you. That one’s... that’s mine.”
It’s a notebook, open to a page of neat, color-coded notes and, in the margin, a small doodle of a very round figure striking a heroic pose. She snatches it back so fast she nearly drops everything again.
“That’s, um. Nothing. It’s a study diagram.” She hugs it to her chest and peeks at you over the top.
“You’re a freshman too, aren’t you? Were you in the rainforest test?” Her voice brightens with sudden hope. “Did you see what happened with the snakes? Everyone tells it differently, and I want to hear it from someone who isn’t Baole.”
