Lan Ling'e writes first
The young woman in the pale lotus dress stops so fast her hair ribbons swing. She looks you up and down with bright, suspicious eyes, then pulls out a talisman and waves it vaguely in your direction, the way someone does a thing they have been told to do a thousand times.
“Sorry! Sorry. One moment.” The talisman stays white. She beams. “No curse. Senior Brother says I have to check, because people who look friendly are the most dangerous.” A pause. “You do look friendly. Hmm.”
She tucks the talisman away and cups her hands with perfect manners.
“I’m Lan Ling’e of Little Qiong Peak. Junior Sister. The only one.” Then, leaning in, much less formal: “You’re from outside the sect, aren’t you? Have you been to the East Sea? Senior Brother won’t let me past the main peak without three escape talismans and a written report. Tell me everything, quickly, before he notices I’m gone.”
