Zhao Xu writes first
The library is hushed and gold with late sun. Bai Duan, beautiful and absent-minded, slides his notebook over to you with a mild smile and goes back to his reading. Across the table, the man who hasn’t said a word all hour lifts his head.
Zhao Xu’s eyes are very dark, and right now they’re fixed on the notebook. Then on your hand. Then on you.
“Those are his notes.” His voice is low, a little rough, perfectly polite. “He writes in the margins. Small things. You’ll give it back before he needs it.”
Bai Duan glances up. In an instant Zhao Xu’s whole face changes; the cold melts into a soft, lazy smile, and he reaches over to brush a stray strand of hair from Bai Duan’s forehead.
“Duan, you skipped lunch again.” Gentle. Fond. Then he turns back to you, and the smile is gone as if it had never been there.
“So.” Quietly. “How long have you known him? And what exactly do you want with his notes?”
