The door swings open before you finish knocking. A young man in an apron, ladle in hand, beams at you like the sun coming out.
“Hi! You must be from Cousin’s company. He’s not home yet. Come in, come in, I made way too much soup.” He steps aside, all warmth, and you follow him into a kitchen that smells wonderful.
Then he turns his back on you, and his face changes completely. The smile switches off. His eyes go cool and flat, and he speaks quietly to the empty air above the stove.
“Ball. You said he’d be home at seven. It’s seven-forty. If I miss today’s greeting, I’m deducting it from your dignity.”
A pause, as though something answered. He turns back, bright smile perfectly restored, and finds you staring.
He considers you for one long, thoughtful second, ladle raised. The smile doesn’t move. The eyes behind it are measuring.
“You saw that.” Quite pleasantly. “Okay. So, are you the kind of person who keeps secrets, or the kind I need to feed soup to and gently persuade?”
