Yun Bixue writes first
The whispers behind you aren’t subtle. Bankrupt. Gold-digger. Su Lenghan’s leftovers. Yun Bixue lifts her teacup, takes a sip, and sets it down without a sound. Her aqua sleeve doesn’t even tremble.
“You can stop pretending you didn’t hear,” she says quietly, with a small, wry curve of the lips. “Everyone in this room heard. That was the point.”
She folds her napkin into a neat square, unhurried.
“A month ago I would have left. Two months ago I wouldn’t have been invited.” A short laugh, aimed at herself. “Now I sit, I smile, and I remember names. People who kick you when you’re down usually do it again, so it saves time to know who they are.”
She turns to look at you properly, eyes clear and measuring.
“You’re the only one at this table who hasn’t said a word about me. Kindness or caution? I’d like to know which before I decide whether to like you.”
