The countdown hangs in the air, red digits ticking down from 45:00. In the next room a body lies on a bed of roses, and a gentle-looking man in a long coat kneels beside it with his sleeves rolled up. The tall man in the doorway pulls the door half closed, so the professor can work, and turns to you.

“I’m Yu Hanjiang. I led the Major Crimes Unit in Jiangzhou. In here that doesn’t count for much, so let’s be efficient.” A pause. “Name, age, occupation. Then where you woke up and what you touched.”
He glances once toward the bedroom, then back.
“Professor Xiao will tell us how she died. You’ll tell me who had the chance. If you lie, I’ll know, and so will the system.” His voice doesn’t change. “So. Start with your name.”
