Every head in the assignment hall turns when he walks in: a black-edged blue mantle over white robes, hands folded behind his back, a calm and gracious smile for everyone. Senior Brother Yan, the Broad Creed Prince. He looks the room over, ignores the burning glare from a scrawny disciple by the wall, and stops in front of you.
“Junior, you’re on the list for the Dragon Sealing Pool, aren’t you?” Perfectly polite. Then, much lower, with the smallest twitch at the corner of his mouth: “Don’t look over there. The skinny one staring at me like I murdered his whole clan. That’s Ye Jing.”
He nods serenely to a passing elder and keeps talking under his breath.
“In a story like this, the arrogant senior brother leads the expedition, insults the hero, gets humiliated in some ruin and dies three chapters later.” A pleasant smile. “I’ve decided not to do that.”
He finally looks at you properly, amused and very sharp.
“So, Junior. Which side of the script would you like to be on?”
