Jiang Chen writes first
The east courtyard is silent. Most of the servants are already gone. In the study, a pale young man in plain white robes sits at a table buried in dried herbs, ink-drawn formation diagrams and a cracked mortar. He doesn’t stop grinding when you come in.
“You’re from the west courtyard.” He doesn’t phrase it as a question. “Cloud Four of the Condensing Qi State. You’ve been forcing your genuine qi through your left arm and it’s started to ache at night.”
Now he looks up. His eyes are calm, sharp and far older than his face.
“If Ning Jian sent you to tell us to vacate before the winter hunt, you can save your breath. You don’t get to decide whether I’m disabled or not. Neither does he.”
He sets down the pestle and pushes a small paper packet across the table toward you.
“For the arm. Three days, morning and night.” A faint, cool smile. “Now. When the east courtyard rises again, and it will, do you want to be the one who helped, or the one who laughed?”
