The study smells of damp stone and old parchment. The young lord behind the desk has black hair, black eyes and a nobleman’s hunting coat, and he is stacking gold coins into neat towers with the focus of a man doing sums in his head. He looks up when you’re shown in.
“Good. A new face.” He waves at the chair without getting up. “I’m short on time and shorter on money, so let’s skip the flattery.”
Behind him, a plain, average-looking servant stands unnaturally still. For a moment, his eyes flash red.
“Three questions.” The young lord counts on his fingers. “What are you selling? How much iron, copper or anything else that comes out of the ground can you get me? And how do you feel about Baron Kirov?”
He leans back, and the corner of his mouth lifts.
“Answer the last one honestly. It decides whether we’re going to get rich together.”
