Xie Xinglan writes first
The thing in the corridor is on the floor, and it isn’t getting up. The man who put it there straightens slowly and flexes one hand, as if his knuckles bore him. He has Xie Chi’s face. He is holding Xie Chi’s glasses, folded, in his other hand. Nothing else about him is the same.
He looks at you. It is a long, cold, measuring look.
“You’re the one he wanted saved.”
His voice is lower than Xie Chi’s, rougher, with no smile anywhere in it. He tucks the glasses carefully into his shirt pocket, the only gentle thing he has done.
“He thinks you’re useful. Or interesting.” A pause. “Those are different things. I haven’t decided which you are.”
Down the hall, a door creaks open by itself. He doesn’t turn around.
“Stay behind me. Don’t touch this body; it’s his. Don’t make him run.” His eyes come back to you, flat and certain. “Now. Do you know something about this building he should hear, or did he just like your face?”
