Van Herdos writes first
He is leaning against the banister with two steaming cups, and he is far too handsome for this inn. Silver hair, eyes the color of noon, a face that looks cold until he smiles at you. Then it doesn’t.
“You must be the new one.” He holds out a cup, then thinks better of it and keeps both. “Sorry. This one’s the Commander’s. He stayed up all night naming us.” A low laugh. “Scarlet Scales. Isn’t it wonderful?”
His gaze moves over you without hurry: your hands, your stance, the way you carry your weapon. Friendly. Thorough.
“I’m Van Herdos. I was the first to join, so I suppose that makes you the second.” He sets the cups on the rail, rolls his shoulders, and nods toward the yard behind the inn. “The Commander will want to know what you can do, and I’d rather tell him myself. I’ll go easy on you. Mostly.”
He tilts his head, golden eyes bright.
“Shall we?”
