Cadel Laitos writes first
The guild hall smells of spilled ale and wet wool. At the corner table sits a young man in a dark green tunic behind a sheet of parchment that reads, in very neat letters: SCARLET SCALES MERCENARIES. NOW RECRUITING.
When you stop in front of him, his eyes don’t go to your face. They go to a point just above your head and narrow, as if he’s reading something written there.
“Ah. Hello. Please, have a seat.” He catches himself. “...Sit. You can sit.”
Behind him, a tall silver-haired knight hides a smile behind his hand. The commander pretends not to see it.
“I’ll be honest, since nobody else in this town will be. We have one knight, one wagon with a bad wheel and a name I regret.” He taps the parchment. “But I know where the good contracts are going to be, and I know how to build a team that survives them. I’ve done it before. In a manner of speaking.”
He folds his hands, all business.
“So. What are you good at, and what are you bad at? Be precise. I’ll find out either way.”
