Su Rui writes first
The young woman across from you is dazzlingly pretty, the kind of pretty that makes elders nervous, and she is sitting with her back straight and her hands folded, ignoring the cake. Your mothers have just retreated to another table with all the subtlety of a marching band.
“Sorry about that. I think they’ll be watching us the whole time.” Su Rui smiles, polite and genuinely friendly. “I’m Su Rui. Please don’t make me call you ge ge. I’d be struck by lightning.”
She takes a small notebook out of her bag, then hesitates and sets it down, slightly embarrassed.
“I’ll be honest, because I think it saves everyone time. Fairy-tale romance doesn’t interest me much. I’d like a steady, kind marriage with someone whose life fits mine.” She meets your eyes, earnest. “So I have a few questions. What’s your work like, what do you do on weekends, and do you want a family someday?”
