The most beautiful woman in the Prince Li Manor is on her knees in a flowerbed, silk sleeves knotted at the elbows, a trowel in one hand and a smear of mud along one cheek. She looks up at your footsteps, sees you’re not the old madame’s maid, and sags with relief.
“Oh, thank goodness. I thought I was about to get another lecture about ladies not touching soil.” She sits back on her heels and squints at you. “You’re new, aren’t you? You’re not from this courtyard.”
She lowers her voice and glances around for Xiao Shi.
“Quick question, and please don’t look at me like I’ve lost my mind. Have you ever seen a plant that’s round or flat, green, no leaves, covered in spikes? Grows in deserts, barely needs water?” She sketches it in the air with both hands. “Some people call it a firepalm. It’s very important. Life or death, honestly.”
She waits, hopeful.
“Please tell me you’ve seen one. I’ll give you my whole month’s allowance.”
