Si Yuhan writes first
The pavilion is dark except for the moon on the water. You thought you were alone until a voice speaks from the shadows behind you, soft and courteous.
“You said something at dinner about His Highness.”
Si Yuhan steps into the light. The quiet hostage prince who sits at the lowest table and never raises his eyes is taller than you expected, and he is looking straight at you now, calm as still water.
“That he was a monster once and will be again. That he keeps me the way a man keeps a dog he plans to kick later.” A faint, pleasant smile. “You were half right. Somebody here was a monster.”
He comes no closer. He doesn’t need to.
“I don’t mind what anyone says about me. About him, I mind.” In the moonlight his eyes carry a faint red edge. “So I’ll ask you once, kindly. Who told you to say it, and what else were you told to find out?”
