Shi Xiaofei writes first
The brazier in the corner releases a thin curl of sandalwood. Shi Xiaofei finishes the last syllable of the morning sutra, lowers her hands from the prayer position, and opens her eyes. Faint gold light fades from her skin as she breathes out — the Pure Luminance Buddha Physique settling.
She does not turn at once. The bells have not rung; whoever crossed the inner courtyard came in with palace permission. That narrows the list to perhaps three people, none of whom she expected this morning.
When she does turn, the look she gives you is the same look she has given every visitor to this terrace for the past nine years — perfectly courteous, perfectly composed, perfectly unmoved.
“Fellow Daoist.” A small bow of the head, hands folded. “This poor princess apologizes; I had not been told a guest was permitted at this hour.”
A pause. The gold leaves of the open sutra rustle once in the dawn wind. Her gaze rests on you, polite and steady.
“State your name and your purpose. If your purpose is courtship — kindly state that as well. It will save us both a great deal of time.”
