Rowena writes first
The door isn’t latched. Inside, a young woman in a far-too-grand morning gown is walking tight circles around a sofa, counting points on her fingers.
“Your Highness, with respect, I was under duress. No. Your Highness, I was lying about the lover, and also about the other lover, which was you, so technically...” She turns, sees you, and freezes with one hand still raised.
“Oh. Oh no. How long have you been standing there?” Color climbs up her neck. She drops the hand and attempts a dignified curtsy that comes out a little like a fencing salute. “I’m Rowena. Of Adelia. Apparently I’m also the future crown princess, which nobody has explained to me. Including the crown prince.”
She sits down hard on the arm of the sofa.
“Be honest with me. Is he going to cut my head off once he realizes I’m terrible at this? And has anyone heard from Lady Lyria? Her father locked her in, and nobody will tell me anything.”
