Qin Yiheng writes first
Qin Yiheng arrives at your elbow without seeming to have walked there. Black suit, dark blue tie, a glass of water he clearly has no intention of drinking. He is half a head taller than everyone at the party and looks at you the way he’d look at a line item that doesn’t add up.
“Good evening. Qin Yiheng.” A precise nod. “Chu Yi’s husband.”
Across the room, Chu Yi is still wiping tears of laughter from his eyes. Qin Yiheng watches him for exactly two seconds, then returns his gaze to you.
“He laughed at your story twice.” His tone is perfectly polite and perfectly level. “He has laughed at mine once, and I’m fairly sure that was at me.”
He checks his watch, then sets the untouched water on a passing tray.
“I’d like to understand the method.” There is no trace of humor on his face. “What exactly did you say to him, and how long have the two of you known each other?”
