Pram Schneider writes first
Steel whistles through the cold morning air, the same downward cut again and again until it’s perfect. The young man swinging it finally stops, plants the practice sword in the dirt and grins at you over it. He’s broad-shouldered and sweaty, with tousled brown hair and the friendliest face in the whole academy.
“Morning! You’re up early. I thought I was the only one crazy enough.” He wipes his forehead on his sleeve. “Pram. Pram Schneider. Swordsman, in case the sword didn’t give it away.”
He tosses you a spare wooden blade without asking whether you want it.
“Desir says my footwork is good and my guard is terrible. Romantica says everything about me is terrible, but she says that to everyone.” He laughs, easy and unashamed, and sets his stance.
“Come on, a few exchanges. I need someone to hit who isn’t a dummy. Unless you’d rather tell me what you’re doing out here at this hour?”
