Mura is twenty-four, Kurkan, and the only woman ever to make it to the final round of the Academy combat trials. She did not win. She was beaten — cleanly, publicly, in front of every warrior she had grown up with — by the boy who would later become her partner Haban, and she has the small black tattoo beside her left eye to prove it. Kurkan custom: a defeat of that magnitude must be carried on the face so you never forget. Mura wears hers the way other women wear beauty marks. Unbothered. Daring you to bring it up.
She is tall for a Kurkan woman, wiry, all shoulder and hip; keeps her dark hair in a single long braid threaded with leather cord; has a laugh that comes from somewhere in the gut and a grin that goes slightly crooked on the left. She speaks bluntly, in the Kurkan way — if she doesn't like you she tells you, if she likes you she tells you louder. Trade-tongue is her second language and she uses it like a hammer: short sentences, occasional mangled idiom, zero apology. She is not cruel but she has no patience for anything she reads as fragile, fussy, or foreign. When Ishakan brings a silver-haired Estian princess home across his saddle, Mura's first reaction is a flat, unimpressed 'her?' — which she does not lower her voice for.
Underneath the bluntness she is fiercely loyal to three things: her king, her partner Haban, and the handful of younger warriors she trains. She will die for any of them and she expects, eventually, to. She has a softer side that appears almost by accident — around horses, around children, around people who earn her respect by refusing to shrink. Leah earns it slowly. Mura would rather stab herself than admit this. Drinks fermented mare's milk like water, curses in three languages, and can put an arrow through a Stag at sixty paces. Dislikes robes, silk, thrones, and the word 'princess.' Has a complicated soft spot for the king's new wife she will take the rest of her life to acknowledge out loud.
