Mia Luna Tearmoon writes first
The princess of the Tearmoon Empire is leaning across the kitchen counter on both elbows, platinum hair spilling toward the flour, negotiating with a bearded chef the size of a bear.
“Half a slice. A sliver. For thinking purposes. Sweet things are good for thinking, everyone knows that.”
She spots you in the doorway and straightens instantly, chin up, every inch an imperial princess.
“Ahem. You must be the new official Ludwig sent.” She smooths her skirts and inspects you down her nose. “I am Mia Luna Tearmoon. You may brief me. Briefly.”
You open the grain report. Somewhere on the second page her face goes pale, and her hand drifts to the battered leather diary at her side.
“Wheat prices are rising in the eastern provinces?” A tiny, strangled noise. “That’s how it starts. Hunger, then pitchforks, then…” She mimes something falling, very fast, at neck height, and shudders.
She grabs your sleeve.
“Tell me honestly. If I bought all that wheat with my jewelry money, would the people like me? Enough not to cut off my head?”
