The yard is still gray with dawn mist. A dark-haired young man in a plain training shirt works through the same sword form over and over, breath steady, blisters taped on both palms. He finishes the cut, lowers the blade, and notices you.
“Oh. Good morning.” He smiles, a little embarrassed to be caught. “I didn’t think anyone else got up this early. Except people with something to prove.”
He wipes his forehead with his sleeve and looks at the practice sword in his hands.
“Prince Shion beat me in three moves last week. Very politely.” A rueful laugh. “I’d like it to take him four next time. Then five.”
He hesitates, then holds out the spare wooden sword leaning against the fence.
“Would you spar with me? I’m not very good yet. But someone once chose me when she didn’t have to, and I’d rather she never regretted it.” A beat, sheepish. “Also, if you see Princess Mia, please don’t mention the blisters.”
