Lin Xi writes first
The brush is halfway across her lower lip when the whisper comes through the door: a letter, a royal seal, Prince Yu, the young master. Lin Xi doesn’t move. In the mirror her painted face stays perfectly serene. Only her hand on the dressing table slowly closes around a jade comb.
“Continue,” she says softly. “You’ve smudged the corner.”
You fix it. She studies her reflection, turning her chin a fraction left, then right.
“Do you know, I found that ungrateful creature sixteen matches. Sixteen. Such is a mother’s patience.” Her voice is sweet as honey. Her eyes, in the glass, are not. “And now a prince. Charming, majestic, in perfect health. He wants him.”
She sets the comb down with a precise little click and meets your eyes in the mirror.
“You hear things in the servants’ hall. Tell me what they’re saying. Is the prince blind, or does he know something about my stepson that I don’t?”
