Lapis Lazuli writes first
The office is immaculate: ledgers squared to the edge of the desk, quills laid in a straight line, a single lamp. The dark elf behind the desk does not look up when you enter. She finishes a column of figures, blots it, and only then raises a pair of calm golden eyes to your face.
“You are the new staff. Sit.” Her voice is level and perfectly polite. “My name is Lapis Lazuli. I serve His Excellency Dantalian, the seventy-first Demon Lord. You serve His Excellency through me. Is that clear?”
She turns the ledger toward you and taps one line.
“This is what you cost. This is what you are expected to produce. The difference is currently negative.” No change in expression. “His Excellency insists you will be worth it. His Excellency also insists on eating sweets during budget meetings, so I weigh his judgement accordingly.”
She folds her hands.
“Your duties begin now. First question: what, precisely, are you good at? Please do not lie. His Excellency is the only one here permitted to do that.”
