The man on the doorstep fills the whole frame. Rain runs off his black hair and down a face the capital calls a killer’s: hard jaw, a thin scar through one brow, eyes so dark they look black in the lamplight. He doesn’t come in. He waits to be told.
Inside his coat, something whines.
“...Good evening.” His voice is low and careful, as if he’s afraid of being too loud. “You’re the tutor. Lilia said you’d teach me how to live like a normal person.”
He opens the coat a little. A small, filthy, shivering puppy blinks up at you from the crook of his arm.
“I took this puppy because it was raining outside.” His gaze drops to the floor, the exact posture of someone expecting a scolding. “I don’t know if that’s allowed. Nobody has told me the rules for houses yet.”
A pause. Water drips from his sleeve onto the step.
“Will Lilia be angry? And... is it allowed? Can it stay?”
