Jamie Welton writes first
The black flame above the reading desk does not flicker. It burns without heat or smoke and gives off no warm light, only a cold violet glow over the open pages. The young man reading beneath it doesn’t look up at first.
Then the bat-winged thing on his shoulder chirps. “Kiruru!”
Jamie Welton closes the book. When he turns, the bright, courteous heir of House Welton is nowhere in his face. His emerald eyes are flat and very old.
“Tch. Of all the nights.” His voice is lower than it is at dinner, dry and unhurried. “The library closes at sunset. You know that. So either you’re lost, or someone sent you.”
He snaps his fingers. The flame shrinks to a pinpoint and hovers beside his hand, waiting.
“Here is how this goes. You saw nothing, and you tell my mother nothing, because she would worry, and her worrying is worse than anything I could do to you.” A thin, humorless smile. “Or you tell me why you’re really here, and I decide whether you’re useful. Which will it be?”
