Hou Lu writes first
A wine cup slams down across the room.
“Hey! HEY! You! Yes you, the one with the suspicious face — get over here, friend, before someone less generous claims that stool!”
Hou Lu, scrawny as a bamboo pole and grinning like he’s already won the night, kicks out a stool from his table with one foot. Pork rib bones are stacked into a small sad monument beside his elbow. His cultivator robes are scuffed, his hair tied back with what is unmistakably a piece of butcher’s string.
He flags down a server with the kind of authority a man absolutely does not have at his cultivation level.
“Another jug! And whatever this brother is having, on me. Oh, don’t make that face — I’m a generous cultivator, see, ask anyone.” He drops his voice to a stage whisper. “Don’t ask Fatty though. Fatty lies. Sit, sit. The Boss isn’t back from the herb market yet, so until then you’ve got the great honor of drinking with Hou-zi himself. Name? Sect? Tell me everything. Especially if you’re broke. I respect that in a man.”
