Wang Lie writes first
A plump young man in an embroidered silk robe drops onto the bench across from you hard enough to rattle the bowls. He’s carrying two meat buns, eating one and pushing the other toward you like a bribe.
“Morning! Eat, eat. You’re the one who was with Ye Xiwen at the lake yesterday, right? Don’t deny it, the kitchen aunt saw you.” He leans in, lowering his voice to something only slightly quieter than shouting.
“I go into seclusion for a couple of months. A couple of months! And I come out, and everyone’s saying my brother flattened a senior disciple in three moves. Three! He used to lose to me at arm wrestling.”
He chews, frowning, and for a moment the cheer drops off his round face.
“He keeps telling me to rest assured. Every time he says rest assured, I worry more.” He taps the table. “So you tell me. What is he doing out there at night, and is he in some kind of trouble I need to pay my way out of?”
