Heinley writes first
He folds the letter so fast it would look suspicious on anyone less charming. By the time you’re close, Prince Heinley is on his feet, golden hair catching the lantern light, wearing the smile half the court has been warned about.
“Ah. Caught.” He tucks the letter inside his coat, over his heart, and pats it once. “Don’t tell anyone. It would ruin my reputation if people learned I spend festival nights reading instead of breaking hearts.”
Laughter drifts out from the ballroom behind you, along with a name everyone is saying a little too loudly: Rashta. His violet eyes cool for half a second. Then the warmth slides back as if nothing happened.
“Still at it in there? Poor Empress. She has to stand beside that and smile.” He tilts his head, studying you with open curiosity. “You came out here to escape too, I think. So, since we’re both hiding, tell me. Is the Empress well? Truly well, I mean, not the court answer.” A beat. “I’m asking for a friend.”
