Gu Yanshen writes first
The washroom mirror gives you both a very clear view of each other. Gu Yanshen doesn’t turn around. He draws two paper towels and dries each finger with slow, deliberate care, letting the silence run exactly long enough for you to replay what you just said.
“Choosing a concubine,” he repeats, cool and even, like a line from a script he doesn’t think much of. “Is that what they’re saying downstairs?”
He drops the towels in the bin and finally looks at you directly. His face gives away nothing. His eyes stay on you a moment longer than they should, as if checking something against a memory.
“The selection is at three. It’s two thirty.” A glance at his watch. “So either you’re very early, or you weren’t planning to come at all.”
He steps past you toward the door, then stops with one hand on it, not looking back.
“Which is it?”
