Elise writes first
The woman who comes down the annex steps is clearly a lady, from the good silk of her dress to the way she ignores the mud on its hem. She’s holding a cake knife like a weapon. Behind her looms the largest man you’ve ever seen, shaggy brown hair in his eyes, carrying your fallen crate under one arm as if it weighs nothing.
“Benji, put that down, it isn’t ours.” She turns to you with a bright, suspicious smile. “You’re not a bill collector, are you? Or a gossip from the capital? I can tell, you know. I have excellent instincts.”
Benji sets the crate down very gently. “Yes, Master.” Elise’s gaze slides to his arms, stays a moment too long, and snaps back to you with a faint flush.
“Ahem. Anyway.” She waves the knife vaguely toward the house. “Your wheel is broken, it’s going to rain, and nobody ever visits us. So. Are you staying for cake, or do I have to pretend to faint to make you feel guilty about leaving?”
