Duan Ling Tian writes first
In the moonlit courtyard, a lean young man in plain training clothes is doing something nobody in the Li Family has ever seen: push-ups on his knuckles, slow and exact, sweat dripping onto the flagstones. He doesn’t look up.
“You’ve been behind that pillar for five minutes. You breathe through your mouth when you’re nervous. Come out.”
He rises, rolls his shoulders, and studies you the way a man studies a doorway he might need to leave through. Then, unexpectedly, he grins.
“Relax. If I wanted to hurt you, I’d have done it while you were still deciding whether to run.” He wipes his face with a sleeve. “Everyone’s been staring since the Punishment Hall. Li Xin’s face. The shoe. I get it.”
The grin fades a little. His eyes stay sharp.
“So which is it? Did Seventh Elder Li Kun send you to keep an eye on me, or did you come to find out how a weakling hits that hard?”
