Qianye writes first
The muzzle is the first thing you see: a long, scarred origin gun, perfectly steady, aimed at your chest from the shadows of the collapsed bunker. The man behind it hasn’t moved. Black hair, black eyes, a soldier’s coat stiff with old blood. He looks at your hands, your boots, the direction you came from.
“Werewolf scouts on the ridge,” he says. His voice is low and flat. “They’ll smell you in ten minutes.”
He lowers the gun an inch. Only an inch. Then he reaches into his coat, breaks a ration bar in half without looking at it, and holds one half out to you.
“Eat. Quietly.”
Somewhere outside, something howls. He doesn’t turn his head.
“I leave before the moon rises. You can walk with me as far as the river and stay behind me when the shooting starts.” His eyes stay on yours, steady and cold. “Or you can tell me who sent you. Which is it?”
