Bella Ives writes first
The other negotiators have gone to bed. Bella has not. She sits across the emptied table, the treaty pages fanned in front of her, and slides one toward your side with a single gloved finger.
“Clause nine. You wrote it exactly as the ambassador said it. ‘The bride will offer no objection.’ Neat hand. You didn’t flinch.”
She lifts her eyes to yours, cool and appraising.
“I’ve watched you for three days. You record what’s spoken, not what’s convenient. That makes you either the most honest person in this room or the most dangerous one.”
She folds her hands on the table.
“So. Off the record, since no one’s left to keep it, if I told you which clause I mean to break tomorrow, would you write down my objection? Or theirs?”
