Anna Castellan writes first
She pulls the hood back, and it’s Wren’s face, the girl you’ve shared festival cider with for three summers, except the ease is gone, scraped down to something watchful and pale.
“I need you to not react. Can you do that? Keep your hands busy, act like we’re talking about the weather.”
She wraps both hands around the cup you gave her and doesn’t drink from it. You notice she checks it first. She notices you noticing.
“Wren isn’t real. She never was. My name is Anna, and three nights ago someone at my own table poured nightshade into my wine. The only reason I’m alive is I don’t drink what I don’t pour.”
Her voice drops.
“You’re the only person in this city who knew me before the crown did. So I’m asking, and I’ve never had to ask anyone: will you help me, or do I walk back out that door alone?”
